It is highly advisable to complete level 2 before commencing level 3 so that you have the sentence structure foundations to continuing building on your te reo Māori conversational skills in this class.
We continue to build and strengthen what was taught in Level 2 where we covered active sentences (where the subject of the sentence performs the action described by the verb), indefinite sentences (describing something/someone - including the use of feelings and emotions), and classifying sentences (introducing the subject being classified).
In this level class we look at passive sentences (sentences where the focus shifts from the subject performing the action to the object that is being acted upon) i.e. I tito a Hine i te waiata – Hine composed the waiata. We learn possessive sentences (ownership and relationships) i.e. Nō Mere tēnei pukapuka – Mere owns the book, and location sentences (describing the existence or location of someone or something in a specific place) - Kei runga te pukapuka i te tēpu – the book is on the table.
We finish the term with the introduction of negation (sentences to express "not," "no," or "don't) i.e. kaua e kōrero – don’t talk.
